Her tenth birthday was supposed to be the best one. Kattie sat beaming at the end of the table before a spell-wafting marble cake. All her friends were sitting on the sides belting out the world's most popular song, and her mother, with an eleventh candle, lit up the cake, then turned off the lights, so that the most significant thing in the room was a flickering, beautiful halo. It certainly started out well.
"Blow out the candles and make a wish!" Her mother commanded, the command that every child was given once a year. Kattie sucked in her breath, then hesitated. Every year before, she had always wished for a pony. Wasn't that what every girl wished for on her birthday? True, she hadn't gotten one yet, but she was sure that if she kept on wishing, she was bound to get one in the end.
But her hesitation was due to the fact that she happened to glance in the direction of her best friend Haley had brought her little brother Julian to the party. Julian was only two years old, almost not a baby anymore, and he was still the cutest thing in the world. Ever since Kattie was eight, she and Haley would always play with him in his crib. She let out her breath against her own hand so as not to disturb the candles as she remembered how happy Haley had always seemed when her brother was mentioned.
It's great being a big sister. When Julian gets old enough, I'll get to teach him everything. I even taught him most of the words he knows. He needs me.
Kattie closed her eyes and inhaled again. Ponies can wait, she thought, I want to have someone need me too. I wish to have a little brother.
Then she blew as hard as she could, and each flame vanished simultaneously...
To be continued...
